'The art is to die for the Homeland, but the greatest art is to live for it'
The Bródno Cemetery, once considered a cemetery for the poor, was the main necropolis of Warsaw. Today, one could say it is the right-bank Powązki. Here rest, among others; people of the pen, actors of theater and film, musicians, athletes, and scientists. You can find the graves of those who fell defending Warsaw in September 1939, as well as the graves of the Warsaw Uprising fighters. I invite you for a walk dedicated to the people who sacrificed their lives for the Homeland and left memories behind…
On November 1, 1939, the occupier restricted religious and church ceremonies. Despite the ban, the residents of Praga paid tribute to the fallen in large numbers.
We meet on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the cemetery grounds in front of the wooden Church of St. Vincent à Paulo (entrance through the gate near the address ul. św. Wincentego 81B). The walk is planned for about 2 hours.
During the walk, we will learn;
- What was supposed to be built in place of the Bródno Cemetery?
- Who provided assistance to artists of Jewish descent?
- Where rests the little-known participant of the action at the Arsenal?
- What did 'Kinga' produce?
- Where will we listen to the 'Prayer for the End of the War'?
- Whose bodies were stolen from the morgue and secretly buried in the Cemetery?
- Who attacked the German bunker, threw a grenade, and died hit by a burst from a submachine gun?
- Who was 'Polska Niobe' and where does she rest?
- For whom was 'the kiss like a marriage proposal'?
- Which couple getting married during the Warsaw Uprising did not have rings?
- Which of the ladies wore a green flowered dress to the wedding?
- Who spent seven days in a canal and drank water from a gutter?
and many more...
'The night quietly leans towards our lips,
our eyes will open to the night -
Colors will fall silent, and you will suddenly mislead the beat
and forget whom you are dancing for and why.
Tears will flow from blue eyes,
but they will not manage to find out anything anymore'
There is no fee for participating in the walk, but if you believe the guide deserves a tip...
The walk will be led by a city guide from the Warsaw Alley. I warmly invite you and see you soon. 😉
