Smile - a facial expression, a grimace formed by tensing the muscles on either side of the mouth. A sign of happiness, satisfaction, amusement. A positive signal to those around us ensuring that the smiling person is cheerful, friendly, open to interaction at any given time. Doesn't the smile bombarding us from everywhere get too much credit?
A cheerful consumer praises a product he used. An amused vlogger lists the benefits of his lifestyle. An engaged employee exudes happiness after receiving yet another developing task. A giggling couple shares facts of life during a first date. A smiling man, when asked “How are you?” replies: “All good, all good.”
During the exhibition, Przemyslaw Robert Chochol (together with Agnieszka Wlachos, Sefa Sagir and Bartosz Wyszynski) will face the phenomenon of a smile as a shield. A transparency separating the one who smiles from the outside world. An internal barrier between what is realized and what is repressed. Based on his own experiences, observations, and artistic vision, he and three other artists will create a world in which viewers will look at a smile from a different perspective. Uncomfortable, off-balance, thought-provoking.
During the six-day event in the 260 square meters of a historic 1960s Prague shopping pavilion we will see:
- Three-dimensional wooden paintings and installations by Przemyslaw Robert Chochol.
- Agnieszka Wlachos' photographs exposing male weaknesses, violating the facade of a smile.
- Sefa Sagir's digital installations interacting with viewers, through which the viewer will engage in the process of creating ephemeral works of art.
- Interactive installation by Bartosz Wyszynski about thoughts that overwhelm us.
