Methodology of Teaching Polish Traditional Dances in Non-Stage Forms According to Piotr Zgorzelski
In Poland, until the mid-20th century, traditional dance was a common element of culture in both villages and cities. Currently, it is gaining increasing interest, especially in large cities, where it can be learned not for performance, not for the stage, but for personal enjoyment, relaxation, maintaining social relationships, or therapy. Inspired by this urban example, the countryside also sees the beneficial impact of dance and begins to organize village dances with old music anew.
The workshop 'Methodology of Teaching ...' is a response to the needs of school and extracurricular education in the field of traditional dance, for both youth and adults.
During the 3-day meeting, I would like to present to you the teaching methods that I have developed during my 30 years of dance practice, during hundreds of dance workshops conducted in Poland and abroad. This is an original program of classes that takes into account the contemporary predispositions and skills of a generation deprived of live contact with folk music.
The proposed method stems from the natural motor skills of our body, everyday activities, and allows for a quick way to teach the basics of Polish traditional dances in odd meter (e.g., oberki, mazurki, waltzes) and even meter (e.g., polkas, krakowiaks, wiwats) while maintaining the characteristic features of the rural dance style.
During the workshops, I will pay attention to what happens in the dance itself and around it, both in the dance technique and in interpersonal relationships.
According to this method, learning traditional dance is equivalent to learning social attitudes and interacting with another person and other participants of the dance event.
Traditional dance and music, just like in the past, are for me a pretext to meet another person. In this form, integration, the pleasure of having fun together, and communal experiences are more important than presentation, e.g., on stage.
Of course, the techniques I present, often drawn from folk tradition, learned during many meetings with its authentic heirs, can also serve to make dance on stage look more natural and impressive.
Thanks to the learned methodology, you will be able to prepare people of different ages to dance traditional dances, especially in circles, both in processions, pairs, trios, and in larger dance formations.
The classes will help you understand how to easily develop a sense of rhythm, fluidity, and lightness of movement among dance students, to discover the possibilities offered by the dynamics and motor skills of our body, and how to enter into contact with other participants of the dance meeting without stress.
I teach dance with full commitment in a non-invasive and stress-free way.
The workshops will be based on Polish traditional dances from regions such as: Kurpie, Kujawy, Kieleckie, former Eastern Borderlands, Lublin, Łęczyckie, Łowickie, Małopolska, Mazowsze, Opoczyńskie, Podlasie, Podkarpacie, Radomskie, Sieradzkie, Suwalskie, and Wielkopolska.
Unique video materials related to traditional dance and music will be presented during the workshop meetings.
