We invite you to a meeting with Jacek Duda dedicated to the history of Służewiec Przemysłowy.
Służewiec is one of those areas of Warsaw that has changed the most over the past few decades. Anyone who has moved to the city in the last thirty years associates this place with a hub of white-collar workers, and a dozen years ago, the term 'Mordor,' referring to Tolkien's works, became popular.
Aside from the fact that 'Mordor' itself is no longer the same as it was ten years ago, there was life here before the 'white-collar workers' arrived. We concluded the lecture on the history of the village of Służewiec in 1961 – now it's time for a story about the industrial and warehouse district of Służewiec. During the meeting, we will delve into the history of the development and decline of local industrial plants, including Tewa, Unitra, and ZREMB, as well as the experimental idea of the Prototype Housing Estate. Together, we will reflect on the naming of Służewiec streets such as: Wynalazek, Konstruktorska, Cybernetyki, or Postępu. We invite everyone who would like to learn more about their surroundings. We will find out what used to be here and what stood here, what stands in its place now and why, and, last but not least, what prospects the city authorities foresee for this area.
Host: Jacek Duda – a graduate of SGH and the Institute of Slavic Philology at UW, has been guiding in Warsaw and the region for 12 years.
The lecture is conducted as part of the project 'Secrets of Mordor... and its surroundings.' Funded by the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw under the 'Patriotism of Tomorrow' Program.
The project is implemented in partnership with Westfield Mokotów, the Society of Friends of Warsaw, the social archives portal Służew and Służewiec, the Better Służewiec Association, Geocaching Warsaw Association, and SP 191.
What was in Mordor before the office buildings were built? We are reviving the archives of the former Służewiec! Do you remember the Amazonka bar? And Mazowszanka, the Tewa semiconductor plant, the construction of the Prototype Housing Estate, or the local cabbage fields? 'Secrets of Mordor' is an interdisciplinary educational and animation project aimed at creating a space for artistic experiments and creative collaboration among neighbors, as well as discovering and popularizing the little-known history of Służewiec Przemysłowy and its immediate surroundings.
