WORKSHOP TOPICS
🟢 February 18 - 'Show Yourself! Paper Creation'
Wallpapers with views of Asian ports, painted porcelain vases, stylized animal figurines. Eighteenth-century residents of the Łazienki Królewskie were fascinated by Chinese culture. During the first workshop of the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will talk about the fashion for so-called chinoiserie and create such objects ourselves - using recycled paper, we will learn how to fold animals in the Chinese technique of origami.
🟢 March 23 - 'Show Yourself! Foil Creation'
Crumpled aluminum foil from a school sandwich or a sheet of metal with an interesting texture? A torn, single-use supermarket bag or an interesting art material? We will discover how used foil and other trash can serve as material for contemporary artists. Inspired by minimalist works from the Polish Sculpture Gallery, we will try to create our own spatial works using various types of foil.
🟢 April 27 - 'Show Yourself! Wooden Creation'
Inlay is a modern technique of decorating furniture, involving the arrangement of precise mosaics using wood. Artists who used it employed various colors and types of this material to create magnificent still lifes or perspective views. During the third workshop of the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will take a closer look at various Łazienki furniture made in this technique and create collages inspired by inlay. We will use different types of recycled wood - sticks, toothpicks, and thin veneers.
🟢 May 25 - 'Show Yourself! Fabric Creation'
A lady-in-waiting in a rococo dress and a king in a coronation outfit. The Łazienki collection consists of paintings depicting beautifully dressed ladies and elegant gentlemen. During the fourth meeting of the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will play the role of court tailors and design outfits worthy of kings and queens. Various portraits from the Łazienki Królewskie collection, depicting people from the Baroque and Enlightenment eras, will inspire us. Using recycled fabrics, we will consider whether fashion is ecological and whether used or handmade clothes can be just as good as those bought in stores.
🟢 June 29 - 'Show Yourself! Plastic Creation'
The Palace on the Island was built on an artificial wooden island located in the central part of the largest canal flowing through the garden - this way, architects created the illusion of a palace floating on water. Inspired by the king's main residence, its photographs, and plans, we will collectively create a miniature of the Palace on the Island. We will use used bottles and other plastic waste to create the model. At the end of the class, we will see if - just like the architects - we can make our object float on water.
🟢 July 14 - 'Show Yourself! Light Creation'
Stanisław August, an eighteenth-century resident of the Łazienki Królewskie, was called the philosopher king by his contemporaries. While ruling, he tried to fulfill the ideals of an Enlightenment ruler; he was interested in art and various scientific innovations, including astronomy. It is no wonder that when Polish astronomer Marcin Poczobutt-Odlanicki discovered a new constellation in 1777, he named it in honor of the ruler 'Ciołek Poniatowski.' During the sixth workshop of the 'Show Yourself!' series, our material will be light, and we will try to recreate the royal constellation with its help. We will discover that even using such a commonly available material, interesting works can be created.
🟢 August 24 - 'Show Yourself! Clay Creation'
Do you know what medals are? They are not only awards for athletes but also small bas-reliefs used to commemorate an event or a person. The first ones were created in ancient Rome, but they gained the most popularity during the Enlightenment when they were made from various materials. During the seventh meeting of the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will make clay bas-reliefs that will commemorate important people for us - parents, grandparents, friends, and maybe even favorite football players or characters from fairy tales. We will be inspired by the bas-reliefs from the Łazienki Królewskie collection, depicting various historical and mythological figures.
🟢 September 28 - 'Show Yourself! Natural Creation'
The buildings of the Łazienki Królewskie are full of surprising details, such as door handles shaped like chubby babies or candlesticks with floral forms. During the last meeting of the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will create decorations inspired by the interiors of Łazienki, which will later adorn our rooms. The material we will use comes from nature. During the classes, we will learn how to dry flowers and other plants and use them to create beautiful decorations. We will discover that nature can be the best artist; sometimes, it just takes a little help to create a masterpiece.
