Part 1 / Romualda Radwańska In a painting or graphic work of art, apart from content, composition, and aesthetic values, it is interesting what means and techniques or tools the artist used to achieve a given effect. This series of three lectures will help answer the question of how a work of art is made. During the first lecture, terms such as support, ground, underpainting, hatching, and others will be explained. Listeners will learn about the origin of pigments, binders, and various types of paints. Painting masterpieces will reveal their secrets. Free tickets available on the day of the lecture from 10:00 AM - November 4 Gangsters, philanthropists, and a pair of violins – the extraordinary fate of Maestro Barcewicz's instruments / Karolina Zalewska – TOPIC CHANGE Rembrandt and his self-portraits – self-creation of a great master / Magdalena Kucza – Kuczyńska Rembrandt van Rijn is known, among other things, for his exceptionally rich series of self-portraits, which document not only changes in the artist's appearance but also his inner states. Throughout his career, he created about 80 self-portraits – in the form of paintings, drawings, and graphics. The MNW collection includes one of his graphic images – Self-portrait in a beret and shawl. This small etching shows young Rembrandt experimenting with facial expressions and chiaroscuro. This graphic demonstrates not only the artist's technical virtuosity but also his approach to his own image and status as an artist. Rembrandt used the self-portrait as a form of self-presentation and a field for formal and psychological experiments. Free tickets available on the day of the lecture from 10:00 AM - November 18 Early Modern Monstrumarium / Karolina Szymankiewicz What was a monster to early modern Europeans? Where did they see it and how did they explain its presence? Were difference and monstrosity the same? We can find answers to these questions, among others, in the paintings of old masters. The lecture will be an opportunity to track otherness in early modern art. Free tickets available on the day of the lecture from 10:00 AM - November 25 A touch of sweetness / Beata Staniszewska Sugarcane has been known in Europe since Roman times, but there are many more ways to sweeten. Sugar, honey, or maybe dates? Each is good, but not all have gained similar popularity. Not everything sweet looked the same in the past as it does today. During the lecture, I will talk about sweeteners and sweets and their hidden history. Free tickets available on the day of the lecture from 10:00 AM - December 2 Secrets of the wardrobe of the last King of Poland – Stanisław August Poniatowski / Magdalena Bialic Stanisław August Poniatowski deserved the title of Francophile and Anglophile – English and French-style clothes were known to him and worn by him, but on a daily basis he dressed quite differently. How? We will find out by visiting the royal wardrobe. Free tickets available on the day of the lecture from 10:00 AM - December 9 New Old Town – the history of the reconstruction of Warsaw's Old Town / Monika Miżołębska The reconstruction of the almost completely destroyed Old Town buildings in Warsaw during World War II was both controversial and heroic. Jan Zachwatowicz, creator and promoter of the reconstruction vision, was aware of the "conservation falsehood" that would be committed. However, in 1980, the reconstruction of the Old Town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which sealed the success of this idea. How different is the contemporary Old Town from the pre-war one? Free tickets available on the day of the lecture from 10:00 AM - December 16 The assassination of Gabriel Narutowicz and its visual representations / Marcin Matuszewski On December 16, 1922, in one of the exhibition halls of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, the first president of independent Poland, Gabriel Narutowicz, was killed by a right-wing fanatic. In a country where democracy is budding and state structures are just being built, the first "regicide" in Polish history occurs. The lecture will concern the assassination itself, but also how it has been talked about over the years. We will also focus on the visual representations of this event. We will try to consider how the theme of violence connects with the space of the attack – the "temple of art," one of the places where Polish culture was shaped for decades. Free tickets available on the day of the lecture from 10:00 AM Before deciding to participate in educational activities, please read the regulations – participation is tantamount to acceptance.
