We tend to treat the 18th century as an era dominated by French fashion, distinguished by finesse and rococo charm. In reality, however, it featured various shades and variants. On the British Isles and in Germany garments had a distinct local character shaped by the lifestyle of local elites. Likewise in Poland, Western European women’s dress differed from what was seen on the streets of Paris and in the chambers of Versailles. The same applied to men around the royal court and townspeople who chose to abandon Polish dress.
Analysis of old portraits, as well as contemporary clothing terminology, indicates that Poles generally adopted French fashion via Germans, which is not surprising given the long rule of Saxon rulers on the Polish throne – Augustus II and Augustus III of the Wettin dynasty. Direct ties between Dresden and Warsaw were also reflected in the appearance of Polish women and men.
