How to capture a memory? Can a photograph convey the emotions that accompanied a particular moment? And what if we could bring a photograph to life? These reflections are the starting point for the creators of the performance “Materia Nomada,” inspired by the work of Kraków photographer Adam Karaś.
Adam Karaś was an extraordinary figure, one of Kraków's so‑called “originals.” In the history of photography he is remembered, among other things, as the creator of the concept of “fotoratura.” He used this term for photomontages made from his own negatives, in which he tried to include his thoughts and ideas. These symbolic‑allegorical compositions, reflecting an innovative view of photography, became the foundation of the performance. Photography stops being a static image — it becomes an individual life story, a moving matter conveying emotions, experiences and the elusive dimension of human experience.
In “Materia Nomada” the photographs gain new life through an original narrative language — movement, gesture and form. Each captured moment becomes a living matter that travels across the stage, revealing to the audience the wealth of experiences usually contained in a photograph.
