In “Cosmic House” Lina Lapelytė — known to Polish audiences for the operas “Sun & Sea” (Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale) and “Have a Good Day!” — makes visible what seems insignificant and slight. Ordinary daily actions, private rituals, attempts to read signs the world may give us, and personal breakthroughs that are hard to notice from afar become important building blocks of a metaphorical cosmic house, which can satisfy our need for rootedness and safety only if we accept that nothing is permanent, nothing is forever. There are no grand narratives, classical dialogue scenes or spectacular biographies here — only fragments of memory, streams of thought and attempts to find some rules in the complexity of the world.
The musical character of the piece and work with the voice — not necessarily virtuoso — allow us to touch what is most fragile and sensitized within us. Bodies set in motion, voices, scenography and even lights together create an environment that, while constantly moving, paradoxically allows a momentary pause to look at the fleeting moments that are the true content of life.
