Polesie Lubelskie is the western edge of an extraordinary belt of wetlands stretching across today’s Belarus, Ukraine and Poland. The rivers Bug, Pina and Prypiat form the watery backbone of one of Europe’s most exotic regions in terms of nature and ethnography. Marshes and river floodplains effectively protected this area from industrialization. Everything began to change after the end of the Second World War, when the process of “large-scale” land drainage began, aimed at drying out the wetlands.
We invite you on a micro-expedition into the world of wild nature and the beliefs of the old Polesuks.
REGISTRATION: ZAPISY
PROGRAM:
- Meeting: 25.04.2026 (Saturday) 7:00 at the parking lot in front of the Palace of Culture and Science on the Kinoteka side. We depart at 7:05 towards Lublin. Planned return to the PKiN parking lot around 21:00–21:30.
- Urszulin – at the seat of Polesie National Park we will learn how the European pond turtle is protected and being reintroduced.
- Spławy Trail (Polesie National Park) – near the PPN education center we will enter a trail leading toward Lake Łukie. About 4.5 km of the 7.5 km route will be walked on boardwalks suspended over the wetlands. We will see the eutrophic Lake Łukie (the Park’s largest lake), the “Spławy” peatland, hummock-hollow alder carr (currant and peat types) and groups of water and marsh birds. Walking time: about 2.5 h.
- Campfire – bring your own provisions; the organizer provides trays, cups, forks, knives and skewers for roasting.
- Sosnowica (about Kościuszko’s love) – in front of the palace wing where, after returning from the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, Tadeusz Kościuszko lived, we will tell stories about his lesser-known sides and his love for Ludwika Sosnowska; here legend mixes with historical truth.
- Czahary Trail (Polesie National Park) – the most beautiful of the nature trails. Walking on boardwalks through the Bubnów bog we will see the Park’s largest peatland, the floodplain at Zastaw (a crane concentration site), trembling sedge meadows and a habitat of the aquatic warbler. Distance: about 5 km. Walking time: about 2.5 h.
The trip is led by Piotr (a daily employee of PPN engaged with heart in nature protection and public outreach).
NOTE:
- Sturdy trekking shoes or comfortable rubber boots are required – in places the boardwalks and paths may be covered with water.
