It is said that in this world only taxes and death are certain. While we can predict the date for settling accounts with the tax office, the day when a taxpayer will leave this earthly realm in a definitive way cannot be determined by any accountant. Since people became aware, they have tried to slightly lift the curtain hiding the date of death and believed that by performing certain deeds and observing the world around them, they could not only predict it but also postpone it. Omitting certain rituals during funerals and in everyday life is not just asking for trouble but for a quicker and often painful death. Today, funerals usually take place very quickly; we escort the coffin to the grave, and sometimes family and close friends gather for a wake, once called a funeral feast. In the past, the funeral ceremony was, more or less, depending on the region, a complicated ritual, and not following the rules could result in another burial soon or... the deceased returning home as a ghost. We invite you to a meeting during which we will introduce the old beliefs of the people living in the country by the Bug, Vistula, and Oder rivers concerning ultimate matters. Even though we live in the 21st century, some of these beliefs are still practiced in villages today, and others we follow ourselves without realizing where they came from. We will answer questions such as: - Why is it said about the deceased that they "left feet first"? - When should you be afraid of your own shadow? - Why don't we greet through the threshold, and why should a bride be carried over it? - How can you simply see death circling around the house? - Why should a garden be fenced in stages? - Why did funeral processions in some regions set out three times? - How long does the soul remain near the body? - Why was a stool placed by the coffin with the body? - Why is it forbidden to observe a funeral procession through a window? - Why did mourners in some regions dress in red for certain funerals? - What, according to traditional beliefs, happens when a priest throws a handful of soil on the coffin? - Should you cry over the coffin, and should the deceased be kissed? - Why is it important to check if the deceased is comfortable before being laid to rest? - Whose bodies will the earth not accept and will throw out the coffins? - What to do if you suspect the deceased was a vampire or a strzygoń? - Why shouldn't the cart carrying the body to the cemetery return the same way? - What will happen if you look back while returning from a funeral? After the death of Queen Elizabeth, the press sensationally reported that the gardener of Buckingham Palace informed the royal bees kept on the estate about the monarch's passing. This is not a novelty. For centuries, also by the Vistula River, the living livestock of the host was informed about his death. In beliefs widespread not only among simple folk, this had its justification. And we will tell you about this too. 🎤 The lecture will be conducted by Arkadiusz Żołnierczyk, a Warsaw guide. 📍 Cocktail Bar Worek Kości, venue for guests 18+ 📍 ul.
