What does science say about the moment when the body dies? Can consciousness exist outside the body? How does neurobiology relate to Hilary Putnam's famous thought experiment – the concept of the 'brain in a jar'? What forms can mourning take in contemporary times? The end of October is a time conducive to reflection – nature slows its rhythm, preparing for winter, and we grapple with thoughts of transience and death. Around All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, we remember loved ones who have passed away, confronting questions about the meaning of life and the limits of human existence. During the upcoming Evening for Adults, we will attempt to look at the topic of death from various perspectives – scientific, cultural, and philosophical. We will talk about mourning, including a new, controversial form of experiencing loss and seeking solace that is developing in some Asian countries. Thanks to technology that allows the creation of digital avatars of deceased individuals, loved ones can engage in simulated conversations with them. We will also examine our native traditions – the ritual of Dziady, which in ancient Slavic beliefs was an attempt at symbolic contact with the deceased. We will recall what these rituals looked like and what they said about the relationship between the living and those who have passed away. We invite you to an evening where we will collectively explore what lies on the other side of life. Tickets priced at 52 PLN are available for purchase after logging in at bilety.kopernik.org.pl.
