There are surely people for whom the winter of 1976 remains memorable. Someone fell in love; someone’s fingers froze. More often than not, temperatures hovered below zero — the winter was far harsher than those half a century later. In Janina Tworek-Pierzgalska’s tapestry, signed on the reverse 'Winter II, 1976', a season commonly associated with decay and death is filled with life-giving interlacings. Materials intertwine, emphasizing mutual connections, while the varied textures evoke a haptic form of seeing. From organic matter emerges an ingenious machinery embedded within a complex structure spanning micro- and macro-scales. The relations are rhizomatic, and the interlacings are strong enough to bear the weight of frozen tree trunks, yet never too tight to prevent sprouting life from taking root.
Although the starting point for the works presented in the exhibition is the construction of human–nature relationships, the human figure does not appear in the artworks. The trace of human presence is instead carried by the textiles themselves and the processes behind them.
