Tickets & details
The screenplay of the film was based on the novel by Swiss writer Robert Walser titled "A Man for Everything" (1908).
The main character is the author’s alter ego, who earned a living as a copyist and a helper in wealthy homes. The story of Joseph Marti is about seducing a person, domesticating him, building a sense of belonging to a place and people until the loss of freedom. The mechanism of humiliating a person through work still operates, which makes Marti a contemporary hero reflecting our reality.
The film’s protagonist is Joseph Marti (Piotr Trojan) – a man for all tasks who abandons the bookbinder’s trade to become the assistant to the eccentric inventor Carl Tobler (Andrzej Konopka). Moving into his villa in Barenswil, he enters a peculiar microcosm of creative energy, but also clear class hierarchies. Over time, from a servant he transforms into a trusted interlocutor and adviser to Tobler’s wife (Agnieszka Żulewska), increasingly entangling himself in relationships that seemingly offer closeness and stability but actually lead to a loss of autonomy.
