Freedom, passion and the destructive force of obsession – audiences will immerse themselves in these emotions and states in the new interpretation of the legendary drama “CARMEN”. Gianni Melfi’s production, with music by Georges Bizet, is a spectacle balancing on the edge of classical ballet, dance theatre and contemporary dance.
“CARMEN” – a story that has fascinated and moved audiences for generations – returns in a new version to the Warsaw stage. This interpretation draws out completely different meanings from the legendary drama. The production choreographed by Gianni Melfi, with music by Georges Bizet, combines elements of contemporary dance and dance theatre. It is a story about freedom and passion, but also about obsession, violence and their dramatic consequences. The story of Carmen, a sensual and independent woman, here takes on the dimension of a manifesto – it does not romanticize violence but shows its destructive power. It is a voice in an important discussion about the experiences of women facing oppression and toxic relationships.
In the title role will appear Chinara Alizade – First Soloist of the Polish National Ballet, an artist endowed with extraordinary stage charisma, who shapes the character of Carmen as a free and magnetic heroine, and at the same time tragically entangled in a story of oppression. Beside her appears Patryk Walczak as Don José – until recently First Soloist of the Polish National Ballet, a man whose love turns into obsession and leads to tragedy.
