Soprano – one cannot deny that it naturally... stands out above other voices – from Italian “sopra” it indeed means “above”. For many people, the highest female voice is the first association with opera. Sopranos most often became primadonnas – the leading female singers in the theatre. Over time the term gained some negative connotations (primadonna = star, a capricious person, looking down on others), but that did not change the high place sopranos occupy – for example in musical harmony.
We will listen to sounds in soprano registers in several different arias, and then our sopranos will briefly descend from their heights to be close to the workshop participants. Soloists of the Polish Royal Opera – Gabriela Kamińska and Justyna Stępień – will talk about the secrets of voice production and operatic challenges. The varied vocal characters of both artists will serve as an occasion to present the richness of soprano sounds and to learn terms such as lyric soprano, dramatic soprano, trouser role, coloratura, or leggiero. During the meeting we will also activate our bodies and voices. We will check how breath and muscle work, body posture, and even mood affect sounds. We will explore where the voice actually originates and create several “acoustic layers” for activities with the sound wave. We do not plan group singing in soprano, but we might hum a few tones together against which the sopranos will shine.
The workshops are intended for children aged 9 to 13.
