A popular-science lecture on non‑destructive ink analysis using spectroscopy and machine learning.

We warmly invite you to the first lecture in the new semester from the “Interesting Chemistry” series, which will take place:
📅
12 February 2026 (Thursday)
⏰
13:45
Our guest will be Dr. habil. Barbara Wagner, professor, who will give a lecture titled “From Pen to Spectrometer – How We Study Historical Manuscripts”.
During the lecture we will learn how an apparently ordinary ink stroke can become a source of precise chemical information about historical documents. We will hear how — without destroying valuable manuscripts — ink “traces” can be collected on special paper indicators and then analyzed using spectroscopic techniques and machine learning.
Thanks to these modern methods it is possible to compare inks, discover stages in the creation of manuscripts and trace their history — linking traces left by old pens with the most advanced research equipment.
We invite all lovers of chemistry, history and interdisciplinary research!
