The outbreak of war in 1914 forces Barbara Niechcic to leave Kaliniec and, with the help of the old Jew Szymszel, seek shelter. On the journey she recalls her life, all the nights and days.

An outstanding adaptation of Maria Dąbrowska’s novel in two parts “Bogumił and Barbara” and “Wind in the Face.” The film features career-defining performances by Jadwiga Barańska and Jerzy Bińczycki, an unforgettable score by Waldemar Kazanecki, and production design that brought a vanished world back to life. Serbinów—the Niechcic manor and farm—was built from Seroczyn near Warsaw. The film earned Antczak the Golden Lions in Gdańsk, an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film; Jerzy Bińczycki won the Best Actor Award in Gdańsk (1975); Jadwiga Barańska received the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival (1976); and the crowning honors were the Diamond Lions for Best Film of the 40th anniversary and Jadwiga Barańska as Best Actress of the 40th anniversary in Gdynia (2015).
