"The Devil" by Andrzej ลปuลawski returns to the Strong Nighttime Screening cycle at Kinoteka! We invite you to the screening: ๐ฌ November 7 at 8:30 PM Tickets for the screening: https://kinoteka.pl/film/diabel-mocne-nocne-granie/ Jakub (L. Teleszyลski), a young nobleman and failed assassin of King Stanisลaw August Poniatowski, returns to his family home in Greater Poland. The country is in decline, it is 1793 โ the Second Partition of Poland has taken place. On the way, he is accompanied by the Devil (W. Pszoniak) and the Nun (M. Niemczyk). In the family manor, hellish desires run rampant. There is no sanctity that is not tainted by violence, broken oaths, or naive sacrifice. The father has committed suicide, the mother is engaged in debauchery, the fiancรฉe and sister descend into madness. Shaken, Jakub, at the Devil's urging, murders his fiancรฉe, mother, sister, brother, and circus performers. In the finale, he turns out to be merely a tool of forces more powerful than himself. Andrzej ลปuลawski's second feature film, like his debut, is set in Polish history depicted as the work of a hellish spirit, with Leszek Teleszyลski and Maลgorzata Braunek in the lead roles. The protagonists are shaken by the convulsions of historical upheavals, political and domestic violence drive their bodies to epilepsy, further intensified by the restless camera work. The author multiplies references to cultural history: Shakespeare's "Hamlet," Juliusz Sลowacki's "Kordian," while contemporary electronic music by Andrzej Korzyลski suggests a link between political fever and modern times. The Devil's whispers, especially the final demand to name the conspirators, allow for an interpretation of the historical film as a parable of March '68. The film was shot, among other places, at Ksiฤ ลผ Castle. It was produced by Film Group X and was banned from distribution, only reaching screens in 1988. Strong Nighttime Screening is a Kinoteka cycle held under the patronage of the Association of Studio Cinemas. As part of it, on Friday evenings, wild, strange, sometimes funny, sometimes scary films will be presented, perfectly tailored for late-night screenings. Is Polish cinema boring? We debunk this myth! Our cycle brings you classic domestic productions that, from their premiere to this day, surprise with their unconventional themes, radical form, and/or controversial content. You will see works by renowned masters as well as gems from experimental creators.
