How was the Radium Institute born? How did it become a great social project? We invite seniors to an autumn meeting from the "Faces of Maria" series! This time, we will look at an extraordinary undertaking that combined science, medicine, and social engagement—the founding of the Radium Institutes in Paris and Warsaw. On the centenary of the beginning of the construction of the Warsaw Institute, we will talk about its history as a joint work of the Skłodowska sisters: - Maria—the creator of the innovative concept, initiator, and ambassador of the project, and - Dr. Bronisława Dłuska—the energetic organizer and spiritus movens of the enterprise. The Institute was the first modern institution to fight cancer in independent Poland, and at the same time a great social project. Leading representatives of science, culture, and politics, scientific societies, and women's organizations were involved in its implementation—and above all, society as a whole participated on an unprecedented scale. At the meeting, we will also talk about: - what work looked like in the first years of the Institute and how patients were treated, - the fate of the radium donated to the Institute by Maria, - the significance of the Curie couple's discoveries for the development of medicine and modern oncology. All this will be told by Aleksandra Towpik, who runs the history department at the Press Office of the Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Institute of Oncology—State Research Institute in Warsaw. In the second part of the meeting, we invite you to health workshops with experts from the Cancer Prevention Department of the Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Institute of Oncology—PIB, Beata Janik and Dagmara Mokwa, who will talk about prevention and early detection of cancer. Participants will be able to practice breast self-examination on models and discuss everyday health care. ✨ Date: October 23, 2025 (Thursday) ⏰ Time: 10:00 ⏳ Duration: approx. 90 minutes 🆓 Admission free 📍 Venue: Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw, ul.
