About the event

The Warsaw City Library and the Relacja Publishing Group invite you to a meeting with Sabina Jakubowska and the premiere of her latest novel “Midwives”, a continuation of the bestseller “Akuszerki”.

📅
Tuesday, March 3, 2026, 6:00 PM

📍
Conference hall in the St. Kierbedziów Building, Warsaw City Library.

The meeting will be moderated by journalist Anna Maruszeczko.

Kraków, 1940. A city gripped by wartime fear. Regina, an experienced midwife and heir to generations of rural midwives, is demoted to a ward attendant. Nevertheless, she continues to fight for the dignity of birthing women. Torn between the hospital regime and care for a family in hiding, she is drawn into the dark secrets of the occupation’s reality.

Subsequent decades — from the darkness of war, through the chaos of liberation, to socialist everyday life — show Regina persisting in her mission to help. She accepts life in basements, hospitals and delivery rooms, carrying within her a strength that swells like a storm.

Sabina Jakubowska — writer, teacher, doula and mother — is an author repeatedly awarded and recognized by both critics and readers. Her acclaimed novel Akuszerki received nominations for the Nike Literary Award, the Witold Gombrowicz Literary Award and the European Union Prize for Literature, and was honored with the title Krakow Book of the Month.
