“Dreams,” directed by Michel Franco, is a moving romantic drama that, with remarkable intensity, tells the story of love challenged by ambition, cultural differences, and social divisions. The film balances passion with cool calculation, showing the high price dreams can demand.
Fernando (making his feature debut Isaac Hernandez) is a young, exceptionally talented ballet dancer from Mexico. He dreams of an international career and a new life in the United States. He believes that his beloved Jennifer — a charismatic, influential philanthropist and a regular of elite salons — will help him fulfill these desires. Driven by love and hope, Fernando risks everything: he abandons his previous life and his own safety to join her.
Fernando’s sudden appearance, however, disrupts Jennifer’s carefully constructed world (in an excellent performance by Jessica Chastain). The woman faces a dramatic choice — she must decide how far she is willing to go to protect the feeling that connected her with Fernando despite the differences dividing them, while at the same time not losing the position and reputation she has built over the years.
“Dreams” is a tale of love, ambition, migration, and the collision of two worlds, in which every feeling carries consequences. Michel Franco once again creates a film that provokes reflection and asks uncomfortable questions: can true love survive social pressure, class differences, and the burden of dreams?
