Recently, when there was renewed buzz about sea expeditions and various stories with ships as the main characters, I was reminded of my own adventure on a German icebreaker. By sheer luck, I managed to join the voyage at the last minute, a journey I still remember with great fondness. I thought maybe it's finally time to tell the story?! 📅 On November 20, 2022, I set sail from Chile towards South Georgia, and then further on to the coast of the Republic of South Africa, on a thirty-day scientific expedition. It was a demanding but fascinating journey, during which I experienced for the first time the rhythm of life on a research vessel: night watches, measurements in icy winds, and work that goes on regardless of weather or fatigue. Each day brought its own story: albatrosses soaring over the waves, beautiful glaciers, and penguins appearing by the hull. There was also a somewhat surreal, pre-Christmas atmosphere in the middle of the ocean, in the southern Atlantic region, where it is summer at that time. It was a month that changed my perspective on scientific research and traveling to remote places. This expedition became a lesson in humility, awe, and appreciating every moment at the edge of the world.
