We invite you to the Warsaw premiere of Antonina Tosiek's book "Sorry for the Ugly Handwriting." 📅 The meeting will take place on October 2 at 6:00 PM at the House of Meetings with History. The conversation will be led by Karolina Sulej. More about the book: - Between 1933 and 1995, up to ninety thousand women could have participated in memoir-writing contests for rural residents. That's the population of Nowy Sącz or half of Olsztyn worth of memoirists. - Julianna wrote her memoir in the 1930s—at night, in secret from her husband. Danka wrote hers in the 1960s—early in the morning, waiting for the stove to heat up. Teresa wrote hers in 1983—on a bus taking her to work at a nearby meat plant. Janka, as a teenager, dreamed of studying Polish literature, but she was more needed on the farm. So, she became a memoirist. - For many of the heroines of this book, writing down their memories was an act of recognizing that their stories deserved attention. For the first time, they had the opportunity to reflect on their personal experiences and give them meaning beyond the private sphere. They spoke in their own words about violence, poverty, or shame, and in doing so, they opposed dominant social and cultural norms. Antonina Tosiek delved into hundreds of original handwritten and typed manuscripts submitted to the contests, as well as statistical data and academic studies. Combining meticulous analysis with sensitivity, she created a portrait of the transformations of the Polish countryside in the 20th century. A realistic and deeply moving portrait. 📖 Book in the Czarne catalog: https://czarne.com.pl/ksiazki/przepraszam-za-brzydkie-pismo
