Where to start learning calligraphy? Which script should you choose? Will you like it? Are you suited for it (you are!)? Is ink different from dye? A nib holder? Galasy? Another blot? What am I listening to?
Don’t worry — we’re here with help and answers. We know it’s easy to get lost among the many tools and scripts.
Calligraphy totally from scratch is an introduction to calligraphy. The class was created so you can try different tools and various script styles to find the one you enjoy working with most. During the session we’ll get familiar with the most important tools and clear up all doubts.
What will the classes look like? From precision to play — in our lettering refuge we’ll immerse ourselves in a sea of ink: the meditative rhythm of the nib, the rustle of paper, relaxation and playful word sessions.
From a dip pen to a ruling pen — the lessons will begin with a theoretical introduction and a demonstration of tools and selected scripts. We’ll move on to tests: getting to know a new tool, basics and rules for drawing letters from exemplars.
Besides learning tools and calligraphy techniques, we will introduce topics essential for every calligrapher: supports and writing fluids, typical and atypical tools, inspirations, practical uses of calligraphy, how to practice at home and how to find the courage to play with gesture.
What do you need for the class?
Who will lead the class? Wojciech Malinowski (@callimetria)
Wojtek graduated in mathematics from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He signed up for his first calligraphy course in 2019, starting with Gothic script — one session was enough to awaken a great passion in him. Since then he has been steadily developing his craft, training under many calligraphers. Letters have become an important part of his life. His mathematical education gives him an analytical perspective and deep understanding of letter geometry. His skills include broad-edge nib, brush and pointed nib; he fell in love with the latter while immersed in the shapes of English cursive.
