Joanna Kinowska, co-curator of the exhibition, will guide us through the display, which for the first time presents the private photo archive of Lieutenant Stanisław Andres from World War II. His photographs, however, are not typical war reportage. "We discovered this story step by step – through photos and the tales of our grandfather Stanisław Andres and grandmother Wanda, née Siuchnińska. Their life seemed destined to be happy and full of adventures. She – a conservatory graduate, he – a young director at Stomil. As we would say today – middle class. When they planned their future and dreamed of exotic travels, dark clouds began to gather over Europe. And then the war broke out, and only he went on a 'trip.' It truly was the journey of a lifetime! Fortunately, our grandfather photographed many of its stages. For us – his grandchildren – this story is like the storyboard of an adventure film. It’s the wartime odyssey of Lieutenant Andres." Michał and Tomasz Wójcik (quote from the album "All Inclusive. The Odyssey of Lieutenant Andres 1939–1947," published by DSH, 2025) The exhibition "ALL INCLUSIVE. THE ODYSSEY OF LIEUTENANT ANDRES 1939–1947" will be available at DSH until September 7, 2025. Exhibited at venues such as Zachęta, Bunkier Sztuki, and the Center for Contemporary Art. Stanisław Andres (1909–2005) was born in Stary Sącz in a forester's family and spent his childhood in Stryj. He attended high school in Lviv. He studied at the Faculty of Law at Jagiellonian University in Kraków and the Faculty of Law and Economics at Poznań University. He did not complete his studies and worked at Stomil as a supply director. In 1936, he obtained the rank of reserve second lieutenant and received an officer's patent. He was a staunch Piłsudski supporter. Before the war, he married Wanda Siuchnińska, and they had two children: Izabela (born 1940) and Jan (born 1948). After the Third Reich's aggression against Poland, he participated in the defensive war of 1939 as a soldier of the 70th Infantry Regiment. He fought in the Battle of Bzura. After the unit was disbanded, he tried to reach Romania. Near Lviv, he was arrested by the Soviet political police NKVD. Initially, he was held in a POW camp for Polish officers in Kozelsk, then transferred to Kyiv, where – as he recalled – he had a trial "for oppressing the working class." He was sentenced to death; however, on July 13, 1940, the Special Council of the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) commuted his sentence to eight years of hard labor in a gulag. He was held in the camp of the Northern Railway Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Komi Republic until August 20, 1941. Released under the Sikorski–Majski agreement, he reached the garrison in Tockoje in September 1941. This was one of the places where the Polish Army was formed in the Soviet Union (from citizens of the Second Polish Republic deported and imprisoned in the USSR) under the command of General Władysław Anders. From that time, he served in the Polish Army. It was then that he began photographing. With Anders' Army, he was evacuated from the USSR to Iran. Then he went to Iraq and Palestine. In the Middle East, he served as a second lieutenant in the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division (from May 1942). In the 7th Carpathian Rifle Battalion, he was a platoon commander. Later (from December 1942), in the 3rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment, in the II Division, in the 6th Battery, he was a reconnaissance officer and platoon commander. In the 2nd Polish Corps (formed in July 1943), he continued military training and followed the route: Palestine, Iraq, Egypt. Then the combat route in Italy: Ancona, Monte Cassino, Bologna. On January 1, 1945, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. After the end of hostilities, as a reconnaissance officer, he was transferred to the III Division of the 2nd Armored Division. He served in the Polish Armed Forces in the West until December 2, 1946. He returned to Poland in May 1947 and lived with his family in Wałcz, then in Koszalin. Until retirement, he worked at the local WSS "Społem." He was a loyal fan of the Gwardia Koszalin football team and also its photographer. He was awarded, among others, the Cross of Valor, the Monte Cassino Cross (1944), the British War Medal, the Star of Italy Medal, the British Defense Medal (1945), and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1975). In 2001, he was promoted to the rank of major. He passed away in 2005. ALL INCLUSIVE.
