Do you remember what assertiveness is? Assertiveness is the ability to express your own thoughts, feelings, and needs in a direct, honest, and firm manner, while respecting the rights and feelings of others. It is neither aggression nor submissiveness, but the ability to protect your own boundaries and interests without violating those of others. An assertive attitude avoids extremes. It differs from aggression (attacking others) and submissiveness (succumbing to others' influence). An assertive attitude combines firmness, respect for oneself and others, and allows for the protection of personal boundaries. Assertiveness can manifest in many areas of life. It is not just the ability to say no, but a way of expressing oneself, making requests, sharing feelings and opinions, setting boundaries, public speaking, taking care of oneself in interactions with authority figures, responding in conflict situations, accepting criticism and praise, constructively communicating criticism to others, as well as giving and receiving compliments. Assertiveness is an acquired trait that can be developed and improved through training and practice.
