Film description:
👉 The titular Jeanne Dielman is a solitary mother trapped in the grind of domestic routine, occasionally supplementing her income through prostitution, hiding the money she earns in a soup vase. Everyday objects, just like banal activities, play a key role here: it is in this film that legendary long scenes of peeling potatoes or making schnitzel appear.
👉 Akerman, in the spirit of second-wave feminism, drew attention to the invisible gestures and work of women in cinema. 'I have a reputation for being difficult, and that's because I'm interested in everyday life and I want to show it. Meanwhile, people go to the cinema mainly to escape from everyday life,' she said in 1982. She emphasized that instead of 'spending' time on films, we should intensely feel its passage. And this time is another important character in this film.
👉 But this manifesto of avant-garde cinema and a flagship work of feminism also has its hidden theme: it is life after the trauma of the Holocaust. The character played by Delphine Seyrig is modeled after one of Chantal Akerman's aunts.
The screening will be preceded by a lecture.
