Is Hinduism a universal religion?
Or perhaps a collection of many religions? Or maybe it shouldn't be classified as a 'religion' at all? Is it the 'oldest religion in the world,' or a colonial construct? Polytheism, or perhaps monotheism? At the meeting, we will discuss the nature of Hinduism, its complicated history, and contemporary manifestations.
We will learn about the basic common features of Hindu traditions, as well as dispel some persistent false myths about Hindu beliefs and practices. We will discuss the varieties of Hinduism: starting from Vedic religion, through the Great Tradition and today's mainstream Hinduism, to tantra and folk Hinduism.
We will also look at the history of Hindu beliefs, including their connections to politics and social changes in ancient Asia, which each time influenced the emergence of new Hindu traditions, leading to today's – so overwhelming to outsiders – diversity of doctrines and practices.
