Program:
***5:30 PM Meeting with Jerzy Piórek
journalist of Polish Radio RDC, a DJ who played at the Olszynka disco in Universam in the 70s and 80s. At that time, it was the best and most ambitious disco in right-bank Warsaw, specially designed and equipped for this purpose. Licensed DJs played ambitious dance music, rock and roll, and rock from vinyl records. Olszynka quickly became a social center of supra-local significance. People came from all over Warsaw not only for dancing but also, for example, for performances by the cabaret Pod Egidą by Jan Pietrzak.
The meeting with Jerzy Piórek will be led by Cezary Polak, a journalist, cultural animator, co-author of 'Illustrated Atlas of Grochów Architecture,' initiator and curator of many artistic and social events in Grochów.
The conversation will be illustrated with archival photos and a film chronicle from the opening of Universam and Olszynka.
***7:00 PM Screening of the film 'Universam Grochów' by Tomasz Knittel, documenting the phenomenon of the local shopping center, which became a symbol of Grochów, a cult place, still alive in the memories of residents today (seven years after its demolition). A broadcast of a specially recorded conversation with the director, who comes from an artistic Grochów family. In Grochów, at Fundamentowa Street, his grandmother Iwona Zaborowska-Baer had an artistic studio, a painter and theater set designer, wife of actor Bogdan Baer. Their daughter Dorota Baer is also involved in painting. Dorota's husband, French photographer Jan Marc-Moser, along with their son Vincent, captures the Grochów atmosphere through the lens - the three of them have already had a joint exhibition at the Kicia Kocia club café. The screening will also be an opportunity to present the artistic history of the family from Grochów and the artistic studios on Fundamentowa Street, which will be narrated by Jagna Knittel, daughter of Bogdan Baer and Iwona Zaborowska-Baer, an ethnologist, journalist, and traditional singer. For 18 years, she has been documenting and performing traditional music from the regions of Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, and Poland. She is the founder of the band Z Lasu and also sings in the band Warszawa Wschodnia.
The author of several animation projects related to Ukrainian and Belarusian Polesie (including Archaic Ukraine, Voices of Europe). She is a director of documentary films dedicated to traditional culture. Since 2010, she has co-created the Warsaw festival of traditional music “All Mazurkas of the World.”
