Carols from 5 continents
'The wealth of Polish carols is extraordinary, and their artistic values are exceptional. I do not know if any other country can boast a collection similar to that which Poland possesses' (Adam Mickiewicz).
Polish music developed in a country uniquely situated in Europe. As a result, it was strongly influenced by the North, South, East, and West. Listening to old Polish carols, it is not difficult to notice the great diversity of scales on which they are built. Some carols sound familiar, while others are almost exotic. In this chapter of our ancestors' creativity, we can even find echoes of the times when Tatars and Turks conquered Europe, bringing with them rhythms, stories, and melodies from the Middle East. Knowledge about exotic instruments, which ultimately gave rise to most musical instruments in Europe, was spread by wandering musicians arriving from the Middle East or from Arabized Spain. Maria Pomianowska's Christmas concert with the ensemble features Polish carols sung on 5 continents, presenting well-known and forgotten Polish Christmas songs played on ethnic instruments from Poland and other corners of the world. The lost sound and word are revived through reconstructed instruments, stories, and melodies that have not been sung for hundreds of years.
