'The Island of Jadłonomia' is a culinary-travel-crime-revolutionary spectacle for children and youth inspired by 'Jadłonomia' – a series of popular cookbooks by Marta Dymek and the philosophy of plant-based cooking promoted by the author. It is a performance that encourages green activism in the realm of one's own plate and personal world.
The heroine of the adventurous-sensational story, drawing from the traditions of Japanese anime films, is a girl named M., who faces a dangerous monster, darkness, that threatens the entire world, especially adults. When the monster appears in the heroine's life, nothing remains as it was. The stakes become the life and health of her loved ones. Will the girl find the secret recipe to heal the world? Who will she meet on the Island, to which a mysterious force will carry her away? And will she manage to return home? How will the encounter with the Witch Jadłonomia, a force that knows everything, end? Will the girl want to be a heroine of the green revolution idea? And if so, will other people help her heal the world, make a change with a spoon, fork, shopping list, and a redefined philosophy of life? There are moments when the danger threatening loved ones forces a redefinition of thinking about reality. At the forefront of the green revolution, the creators of the spectacle see children and young people who are just growing into the responsibility that their parents have shunned.
'The Island of Jadłonomia' is a spectacle about changing thinking. But since thinking alone is not enough, it also addresses the need for action. Full of humor and horror, plot twists, and bitter laughter, the performance invites you to a world where children and youth are spoken to seriously, without pretending that the world is better than it is. The comic story of a little revolutionary encourages joint reflection among children and adults – reflection on what can be done daily to live healthier, more responsibly, and with an eye toward a better future for the planet, people, and non-human beings. The performance about responsible eating presents the audience with a shared challenge of caring for a world that requires healing and immediate ecological, ethical, and culinary intervention.
'The Island of Jadłonomia' is another performance created by Maciej Podstawny and Dorota Kowalkowska with the aim of strengthening children's and teenagers' agency and the need for intergenerational education through theater. Previous performances by this team, 'Greta and the Last Whale' and 'The Snow Queen,' have gained recognition from audiences and many awards related to youth art. This time, the duo of creators invited playwright Jan Czapliński to collaborate on the script. Among the inspirations, one can certainly mention, above all, the 'Jadłonomia' series by Marta Dymek, but also 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Spirited Away: In the Land of the Gods' by Hayao Miyazaki.
