Since its inception, Radio Jazzkultura has aimed to support and promote the music of young Polish artists representing the jazz and improvised scene. As a mission-driven radio, we strive to closely follow what is happening on the Polish scene and help artists, especially at the beginning of their careers, who find it so difficult to break through with their music to the media, and consequently to listeners. Hence the idea for a series of radio concerts, through which the work of musicians who are before or just after their debut will have a chance to be recognized by a wider audience.
First, on December 4, vocalist Basia Małecka and pianist Basia Derej will perform. They have created an extraordinary duo playing original songs by Basia, as well as pieces from the repertoire of Agnieszka Osiecka, which Małecka recorded in a completely new version on her debut album 'Agnieszka.' The music is very intimate, unhurried, and sparse, yet refined and focused on the noble timbre of the vocalist's voice and the sensitive parts of the pianist.
Next, on December 9, the music of the trio Product May Contain will resonate, consisting of: Tymon Kosma – vibraphone, Filip Botor – double bass, and Mateusz Borgiel – drums. The starting point of their music is the world of chamber jazz, but they escape from labels by combining various aesthetics and inspirations. At times trance-like and ambient, at times intense and dense playing, held together by harmonious sounds. The trio received the Grand Prix 2023 in the Jazz Individuality competition at the Jazz nad Odrą Festival. The band is currently looking for a publisher for their debut material.
Next, on December 11, Paweł Krawiec Trio will perform. The band, alongside the leader and guitarist, includes double bassist Jakub Kozłowski and drummer Gabriel Antoniak. The gentlemen will present material from their recently released album 'Brawura,' which came out in September this year. It is an attempt at a fresh perspective on the guitar trio, based primarily on original compositions. The music is characterized by spontaneity and rock'n'roll wildness.
On December 18, we will present a duo formed by violinist Lucy Brown and drummer Aleksander Myszkowski. They are still studying artists, Aleksander in Katowice, Lucy currently in Oslo. They met somewhat by chance in Katowice, started playing together, and although they never thought about a duo for violin and drums, they worked so well together that they began to perform concerts. They draw inspiration from classical music, Polish folklore, and Scandinavian jazz. They are currently working on releasing their debut album.
Just before the holidays, on December 23, the Krakow quintet Quietet will perform. This is also a band that is still before the release of their debut album. It was founded by instrumentalists studying at the Krakow Academy of Music: Dominik Cichy, Michał Kołodziej, Michał Tulik, Szymon Mika, and Tymoteusz Huge. After just three meetings and rehearsals, they recorded a piece that they sent to a competition organized by the Italian 7 Virtual Jazz Club in 2023 and won in the category for musicians under 25 years old. With the same composition, albeit in a slightly different version, they won a competition organized by the U Know Me Records label, which allowed their piece to be included in the compilation 'Generacja Jazz.' What they create is described as emotional music.
The cycle will conclude with a concert by Hania Derej's quintet, broadcast on December 26. The musicians will refer to the debut album 'Evacuation,' which features original pieces by the leader and pianist. The quintet, which includes saxophonist Cyryl Lewczuk, trombonist Tymon Okolus, bassist Filip Hornik, and drummer Kuba Długoborski, was formed in 2022 during the International Jazz Workshops in Chodzież. The leader, Hania Derej, despite her young age, has already gained recognition on the Polish jazz scene, demonstrating musical versatility, excellent craftsmanship, and continuous, intense development in various musical fields. She is currently studying in Krakow and Amsterdam.
The project is co-financed by the European Union NextGenerationEU.
The partner of the concerts is the Strefa Nowa club.
