'Do you generally not laugh at jokes that you consider offensive? Have you ever found that when you pointed out a division, you were seen as the cause of the divisions? Have you ever heard: 'Smile, darling, it could always be worse' or 'Cheer up, my dear, maybe nothing will happen'? Is it enough to just open your mouth for people to start rolling their eyes? Does the atmosphere
thicken as soon as you appear or mention something? If you answered yes to even one of the above questions, perhaps you are a feminist killjoy.'
🔥 One of the most important feminist texts of recent years The Feminist Killjoy's Guide by Sara Ahmed, translated by Magdalena Kunz, in a performative rendition!
The performance by the Artistic Group TERAZ POLIŻ examines the titular feminist killjoy. It poses questions about its individual and collective identity, about who it is, who it can be, and when you become one. It reflects on who, how, and why to spoil the fun, as well as what to do when the fun has been spoiled so much that the repercussions are hard to bear. It looks at everyday, small, and large gestures of feminist killjoys, showcasing a spectrum of practices, styles, and possibilities of feminist fun-spoiling. It inspires becoming a killjoy or becoming one even more.
💪 The performance, like Sara Ahmed's book, is a positive project, a kind of helping hand or sisterly shoulder, supporting in the difficult and often exhausting struggle for change. It is a space for meeting future and present feminist killjoys, a place for stories, an attempt to collectively create a killjoy herstory.
👏 The Feminist Killjoy's Guide is also a thank you to all past and present killjoys who have persistently and resolutely voiced their dissent. For all those who, often at the cost of loneliness and burnout, have worked and are working for the change we desperately need.
The creators are inspired by both the non-fiction form and the textbook character of the book. For these reasons, the performance remains faithful to the practice of conveying personal experience and knowledge, with a toolkit and the aesthetics of a performative lecture as the foundation of the work. The conceptual form of the presentation allows for the creation of a multidimensional choreography of knowledge, body, and experience. It allows for a clear
and respectful way of conveying her philosophy and connecting it with the experiences of Polish feminist killjoys.
