Hugo Race, once a co-founder of The Wreckery and Bad Seeds, who today actively works as an international producer, author, and artist with groups such as Fatalists, The True Spirit, Sepiatone, and Dirtmusic, is known for his soundscapes that blend elements of folk, blues, experimental, electronic, psychedelic, and rock music.
Hugo Race hails from Australia but is known worldwide, including in Poland, where he has regularly toured. He comes from Melbourne, Australia, but his travels have made him a 'citizen of the world,' having lived and created in Australia, Sicily, Germany, the UK, and the USA for over 35 years.
In 2024, Hugo Race and Michelangelo Russo (True Spirit) return as a duo, 7 years after the release of the album 'John Lee Hooker's World Today,' which paid tribute to the legacy of the blues legend, rediscovered by them for today's listeners in a swirling mix of analog noise and deep trance pulse.
Hugo and Michelangelo combine rock sounds, blues, ambient, and electronics on their raw, captivating new album '100 Years,' which is somewhat a continuation of the album featuring Hooker's songs, but this time it consists solely of tracks written by Hugo Race.
100 Years showcases the duo's sound alchemy alongside Race's raw songwriting style. Inspired by the raw majesty of early blues recordings, the album was recorded over two days during an uninterrupted live session of Hugo Race and Michelangelo Russo. Amplified harmonica, spacious guitars, smoky vocals, and primal rhythm guide us through a landscape of dreamlike devastation, a hypnotic wall of sound suspended in time and space, celebrating endurance and redemption, handcrafted from ancient raw materials. 'Tradition is not about passing on ashes, but about the fire.'
Henry Rollins called Hugo Race 'a national treasure of Australia.'
The album is released by Gusstaff Rec. - 11.10.2024.
As a special guest before Hugo and Michelangelo, Patryk Zakrocki (formerly of Polski Piach and Leggerezza) will perform with his acoustic and instrumental interpretation of the blues.
