Dawid Ajzensztadt was born in 1890 in Nasielsk. At the age of 31, he became the director of the choir of the Great Synagogue on Tłomackie. This most magnificent Jewish choir of its time consisted of about 80 boys aged 9 to 13, singing soprano and alto, as well as about 20 adult men – tenors, baritones, and basses. In addition to liturgies, they enhanced many concerts with secular music and prepared recordings for Polish Radio. In the Great Synagogue, the choir sang accompanied by a fisharmonia, although many sources also mention the delightful sound of the organs.
The most famous activity of Ajzensztadt in the field of popularizing Jewish music was the annual concerts, which attracted the entire musical community of Warsaw, led by Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Over the years, they were hailed as the greatest achievement of vocal art in Poland. Ajzensztadt's career and the history of the Great Synagogue Choir were interrupted by World War II. The tradition of choral and organ Jewish music in Poland was broken. After 80 years, the music of Dawid Ajzensztadt returns to Warsaw.
