At the conference, we will ask questions about the 'old' and 'new' faces of the Kościuszko Insurrection, as well as its traditions, particularly during the January Uprising. To what extent was the insurrection meant to save the free Commonwealth of Both Nations, and to what extent was it to create – through a nationwide uprising – a new Poland?
In the course of lively discussions and informal conversations, historians and museum professionals will share with the audience reflections on the ideological, geopolitical, military, social, and religious dimensions of the insurrectionary Commonwealth. We will start with the figure of Tadeusz Kościuszko, the iconic hero of the insurrection, and conclude with an attempt to answer the question of whether it was the year 1794 or rather 1863 that served as the bond between old and new Poland.
