The Tamed Man by John von Düffel is a play based on the bestselling novel by Esther Vilar of the same title and has made a real splash, bringing the author worldwide fame. Her observations on gender relations caused quite a stir in feminist circles in Western Europe in the 1970s. However, they have not lost their momentum or sharpness – only now we can play with it and laugh at ourselves, seeing the absurdity in what once sparked a war.

So do a domesticated man and an emancipated businesswoman have a chance for a successful relationship? Will a woman earning much more than a man lose respect for him, and will he not turn into an insecure 'Teletubby'? What, according to men, is the ideal woman? An enterprising businesswoman or a helpless beauty with a not-so-high IQ? Or perhaps this helplessness is illusory, and the man is 'being trained'?

And what, according to women, should a man be like? Decisive, consistent, and strong, or on the contrary – sensitive and tender? Or maybe feminism was mistaken and created a 'gang of egomaniacs'? Sensitive – yes, but about their own issues.

John von Düffel brilliantly utilized the material provided by Esther Vilar and wrote a comedy with farcical elements. The characters in the play work at the same company, and Helena receives a promotion offer. The problem is that her partner secretly dreams of the same position. Things get even more complicated when their mothers enter the scene. Great dialogues, surprising plot twists, and excellent humor are undoubtedly the strengths of The Tamed Man.

A good choice for everyone looking for entertainment in the theater, but also for those who want to leave the theater with a sense that what they just saw prompts reflection.
