In the workshop, we will create a notebook using the traditional Japanese bookbinding technique WATOJI 和綴じ. WATOJI is a hand bookbinding method that involves sewing a book or notebook in such a way that the threads are visible and often form a specific pattern. The sewing of paper into compact codices appeared in ancient China during the Han dynasty (202 BC - 8 AD), while it reached Japan through Korea in 610 AD, where various sewing patterns were developed.
Books were traditionally made from washi paper, which was written or printed on one side, then folded in half and sewn together along the opposite edge.
Each participant will design and create a unique notebook in the WATOJI technique in A5 format with a unique cover appearance using washi paper, cotton threads that we will wax ourselves, glue, and tools such as awls, needles, and knives.
