🟡 ABOUT THE EVENT
Curator-led tour of the exhibition 'Two Souls of the Folk Creator'.
🟡 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition 'Two Souls of the Folk Creator' is based on the premise that objects collected in ethnographic museums referred to as 'folk art' always have two authors from two different social backgrounds. One of them is the 'folk creator,' who physically makes the object. The other is the 'intellectual,' who hides their co-authorship behind the figure of 'recognition' or 'discovery' – they come to the village and legitimize the object as folk art. The concept of 'two souls' thus indicates that folk art is a construct created by the urban intelligentsia.
The exhibition 'Two Souls of the Folk Creator' shifts the focus from the intellectual discourse on art and folk culture to the village, its material culture, and its inhabitants. It presents folk art as a result of a social relationship that was asymmetrical in many ways, while simultaneously trying to highlight various aspects of the agency of creators of things referred to as 'folk.' It also makes a critical contribution to the self-reflection of the ethnographic museum regarding the provenance of its own collections and its own function in constructing hierarchies of knowledge and power.
