As part of SOUNDS OF SILENTS 2. Warsaw Silent Film Days, we invite you to a MASTERCLASS LECTURE dedicated to compositional and improvisational strategies and techniques for silent films
At Chopin University Cinema (CU Cinema)
Admission is FREE. Reserve your ticket👇
The event is organized in collaboration with the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music.
The masterclasses will be led by:
Günter A. Buchwald Conductor, composer, pianist, violinist, has been accompanying silent film screenings for nearly 40 years,
and Stefan Wesołowski, composer and violinist, creator of film music, among others.
Silent film festivals around the world bring together music lovers and cinema enthusiasts during film screenings. In recent decades, general rules for composing music for silent films have developed, aimed at supporting the coherence and comprehensibility of the works and placing them in the era in which they were made. These rules are both contested and creatively transcended.
During the planned masterclass, both the mentioned rules and the ongoing debate around them will be discussed. The artists will select excerpts from films – for which they created music and those from the SOUNDS OF SILENTS program – and these will serve as a basis for presenting possible musical interpretations live to the audience.
The second goal of the lecture is to improve the technique of young artists considering a career as film accompanists. The lectures will be primarily aimed at musicians and composers (including students of these fields), but will also be open to all interested parties. The musical erudition of the presenters – Günter Buchwald and Stefan Wesołowski – their knowledge of past and contemporary means of expression, as well as their excellent musical imagination will allow a wider audience to delve into the secrets of the silent film accompanist's craft.
