17.10.2024, 11:00 - 20:00
The exhibition runs from October 17, 2024, to April 17, 2025 ✨
Kitchen evolutions – how and what did Warsaw eat over the centuries? ❔
The exhibition tells the story of the city… from the kitchen! 🍴
The ways of preparing and serving meals, the most popular dishes, and the places where people ate have changed over the centuries, reflecting social, cultural, and political transformations.
From the Middle Ages to the present, archaeological discoveries, everyday objects, archives, photographs, as well as works of ancient and modern art will guide you through this extremely important area of life.
What was and is Warsaw's cuisine? ❔
The exhibition 'On-site and Takeaway. Warsaw Cuisine' presents eight centuries of food history in Warsaw. 🍴
Food occupies a significant place in the social history of the city. It perfectly illustrates the ongoing transformations, but it also has a considerable impact on customs, interpersonal relationships, and urban space from medieval times to the present.
The narrative of the exhibition develops around home cooking and urban gastronomy. 🥕
Ancient methods of preparing and storing food are illustrated by objects from archaeological excavations. Culinary innovations began to occur only in the early 19th century – these can also be traced through the example of the first gas stoves or devices such as ice cream makers, mixers, slicers, and electric kettles.
In the next room, a large table will show how important a part of culture is what we eat. The way dishes are served is an expression of identity.
The exhibition also features one of the first editions of the legendary cookbook by Lucyna Ćwierczakiewiczowa '365 Dinners for Five Zlotys.'
Subsequent parts of the exhibition are dedicated to the activities of charitable institutions and street food.
The beginnings of today's trendy street food date back to the Middle Ages, and the exhibition reveals how dishes served outdoors have changed, as well as what trade and fairs were and how collective catering developed.
Café gardens and sharing treats at picnics by the Vistula also have a long tradition. The last part of the exhibition tells about eating outdoors, both in the past and now.
'On-site and Takeaway' is not only a historical perspective but also a look at the present. The relevance of the topic of preparing and consuming food is evidenced by selected works of art by, among others, Bettina Bereś, Dorota Podlaska, Rafał Milach, and Pola Dwurnik. Street food, ancient kitchens, canteens, and picnics are presented in drawings by Jan Piotr Norblin, Franciszek Kostrzewski, and Henryk Pillati, as well as photographs by Konrad Brandl and Aleksander Minorski.
The theme of the exhibition is close to everyone, including the youngest visitors, which is why in several places the exhibition smoothly transitions into a space for play and learning. 🥕
Next to a large table showcasing table settings from different eras, a space for creative activity has been prepared – composing your own 'meals' from magnets. At the end of the exhibition, you can also create a menu for the 'Museum of Warsaw food truck.'
