The recently released album “Lighthouse” (expanded edition) includes eight additional tracks and three exclusive live performance videos recorded last December at Easy Street Records in McKagan's hometown of Seattle, Washington. The additional tracks include a stripped-down, acoustic version of the standout song “I JUST DON’T KNOW,” transformed from a powerful original into an inspired, reflective ballad that showcases McKagan's lyrical and vocal sensitivity. The album can be listened to at: https://duffmckagan.ffm.to/lighthouseretail
Duff also released his first live performance, where he and his band presented material from “Lighthouse.” The concert recorded at Easy Street Records in Seattle, USA, can be watched at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTJ_4LTwaT4
Duff McKagan:
For over 40 years, Duff McKagan has been driven by an unstoppable creative force, encompassing numerous bands, tours, collaborations, and lyrics. “LIGHTHOUSE” is the first complete set of compositions that emerged from McKagan's studio. Songs like “HOPE” (featuring drummer Paul McCartney’s Abe Laboriel Jr and Slash’s melodic lead guitar) and the philosophical “I JUST DON'T KNOW” (featuring McKagan's longtime friend Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains) most fully showcase McKagan's artistic spirit, blending acoustic elements with sharp rock'n'roll to find the perfect point between soul-searching reflection and pure energy. The collection of 11 tracks is further highlighted by an additional take on the title track, “LIGHTHOUSE (REPRISE),” featuring the one and only Iggy Pop.
Starting at just 15 years old, McKagan was part of such diverse and influential bands as The Vains (1979), The Fastbacks (1980), The Living (1982), The Fartz (1982), 10 Minute Warning (1983), and Loaded (1998), along with, of course, his historic role as a founding member of both Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver. Produced by three-time GRAMMY® winner Shooter Jennings, “Tenderness” became a powerful new chapter for the still-evolving artist, who confronts social ills and his personal transgressions against a rich, sonorous backdrop of Americana-based arrangements. Recognized by Loudwire as one of the “50 Best Rock Albums” of that year and rated three and a half stars by Rolling Stone, which reviewed the record as “an album full of beauty and heart… conscience music, heavy tracks with a light touch,” it features the breezy rock number “Chip Away,” praised by the maestro himself, Bob Dylan, who recently declared the song a personal favorite.
“There’s a song by Duff McKagan called ‘Chip Away’ that has deep meaning for me,” Dylan told The Wall Street Journal. “It’s a graphic song. It chips away piece by piece, like Michelangelo, breaking the marble stone to reveal the form of King David inside. He didn’t build it from scratch; he chipped away at the stone until he found the king. It’s like I’m writing my own songs – I overwrite something, and then I cut out verses and phrases until I get to the essence of the thing.”
