About the training:
Trauma has many names. According to available classifications of diseases and disorders, trauma refers to situations that threaten health or life. Research shows that it is not these types of events that cause the greatest psychological harm and are the source of suffering for our patients. The cause is trauma related to emotional neglect and deprivation of needs, parentification in childhood, and experiences of physical violence.
During the workshop, I will want to show patients' reactions to the experience of relational trauma: on a psychological and biological level. We will see how the 4 basic responses to trauma (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) influence the formation of cognitive and relational schemas and what diagnoses from Axis I patients from each group may present. We will learn to support patients in emotional regulation (through the body and through the mind), both those reacting with strong arousal and those reacting by disconnecting. The workshop will also show how to recognize relational patterns that patients invite and how to give them a chance to create new, healthier relational patterns.
And finally, we will learn to process traumatic experiences focusing on experiencing feelings in a safe relationship with the therapist. There will be discussions about types of crying and how substitute affects mask feelings related to past and current relationships.
All content will be enriched with case descriptions, recordings of sessions, and practical learning of specific therapeutic interventions.
Workshop plan:
Day 1
📌 Psychodiagnosis of trauma responses
📌 Stages and goals of therapy.
📌 Identification of anxiety levels and tension regulation techniques - regulation through the mind and through the body.
📌 Building greater affect tolerance
Day 2
📌 Relational patterns and defense mechanisms created in response to trauma:
- working with projections and transference, splitting, denial.
- creating new relational patterns - learning new habits
- working with the critical and demanding voice as a remedy for chronic self-blame and shame
📌 Connections between the present and the past - working with memory triggers, separating the present from the past
Day 3
📌 Healing through experiencing feelings towards all actors in the patient's drama:
- Perpetrator, witness, observer, rescuer - individuals involved in the patient's traumatic experiences
- naming and talking about feelings (engaging the left hemisphere of the brain) - understanding one's emotional reactions as responses to stimuli
- experiencing and feeling emotions (engaging the right hemisphere of the brain)
- substitute affects - anger as a mask for sadness, tearfulness as a mask for anger and other feelings
- types and reactions to crying.
