ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
The title Dichotomy of Colors refers to the duality of understanding the functioning of color in social space. On one hand, there is a very long tradition associated with the symbolic perception of colors, while on the other hand – the artistic movements of the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, color experiments related to the experiences conducted at the Bauhaus, or the developing psychology have shed a completely different light on how color affects the viewer. Anna Wolska's painting exhibition addresses issues related to color – intensity, purity, the power of color impact, the concept of emanation, vibration, energy, its hypnotic, psychosomatic, or haptic properties.
The artist completely rejected building content in the painting and shifted her attention to color and its possibilities of creating plastic values. Wolska's paintings are full of strong colors, such as juicy yellow, red, blue, and cobalt, complemented by derivative colors: violet, pink, green, orange. These works almost scream with color and exert a strong influence on the viewer. Sometimes a horizontal line appears on them. However, it does not have the character of a horizon, rather a light or dark spot, because color, its density, penetration, and the rhythm of brush strokes constitute, according to the artist, a sufficient and quite autonomous kind of expressive narrative.
ARTIST BIO: Dr. Anna Wolska is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (diploma in the studio of Prof. Stanisław Kulon) and the Faculty of Art at Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce. During her studies at the Sculpture Department of the ASP, she also attended the painting studio of Prof. Jerzy Tchórzewski and Prof. Zofia Glazer at the Faculty of Graphics. She obtained her doctorate in 2019, realizing the painting project Real-Not Real under the supervision of Prof. Urszula Ślusarczyk and Dr. hab. Maria Piątek at the Faculty of Art UJK. Currently, Anna Wolska teaches at the Warsaw Film School, WIT Academy, and the Faculty of Media Art at ASP in Warsaw, where she heads her own studio. Her extensive interests – from painting, photography, new media to spatial objects – define the artist as fully interdisciplinary, although, as she herself admits, traditional oil painting and photography are closest to her. Anna Wolska has realized over a hundred curatorial projects, including: solo exhibitions, festivals, reviews, competitions, and numerous social projects, and she also managed the Gallery Obok ZPAF.
