History of the Chopin Concerts in the Royal Łazienki.
The Chopin Concerts, organized in cooperation with the Royal Łazienki by the Capital City Estrada and the Fryderyk Chopin Society, are one of the oldest musical events in the capital and its cultural showcase.
The first recitals at the Chopin Monument took place in 1959, shortly after the reconstruction of the monument to the outstanding Polish composer. The monument itself has had a tumultuous history. The idea for its creation arose in 1889, on the 40th anniversary of Fryderyk Chopin's death. However, Poland was then under partitions, and the Russian authorities effectively blocked this initiative. It was only ten years later that the artistic community of Warsaw managed to organize a competition for the monument's design. An international jury recognized the innovative work of the outstanding Polish sculptor, Wacław Szymanowski, as the most interesting. This verdict provoked numerous objections and discussions. Nevertheless, the competition project was realized, and on November 14, 1926, the monument, a monumental vision of the inspired Chopin sitting under a broken willow, was solemnly unveiled.
In 1939, when Warsaw was under Nazi occupation, the performance of Chopin's music was banned, and the following year (1940) the monument was blown up. Only after the war, in the ruins of a Wrocław wagon factory, was Chopin's head from the sculpture in Łazienki found, and based on the surviving plaster model, Szymanowski's work was reconstructed. The monument to Fryderyk Chopin was erected in its former place in 1958, and already a year later, the music of the Polish creator was resonating from there.
Over the years, concerts in Łazienki have undergone various modifications. Ultimately, a formula of classical recitals held every Sunday from mid-May to the end of September was adopted. This choice was dictated by the enormous interest in the concerts in Łazienki. The selection of artists also influenced this popularity, as those performing at the Chopin Monument considered it an honor, regardless of certain inconveniences, such as the weather. The story of Halina Czerny-Stefańska's performance, who completed her recital despite being stung by a wasp on her hand, is famous.
