WORKSHOP THEMES
🟢 February 18 - 'Show Yourself! Paper creation'
Wallpapers with views of Asian ports, painted porcelain vases, stylized animal figurines. The 18th-century residents of the Royal Baths were fascinated by Chinese culture. During the first workshops in the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will talk about the fashion for so-called chinoiserie and make such objects ourselves - using recycled paper, we will learn how to fold animals in the Chinese origami technique.
🟢 March 23 - 'Show Yourself! Foil creation'
Crumpled aluminum foil after a school sandwich or a sheet of metal with an interesting texture? A holey, disposable supermarket bag or an interesting plastic material? We will find out how used foil and other waste can be a material for contemporary artists. Inspired by minimalist works from the Polish Sculpture Gallery, we will try to create our own spatial works using different types of foil.
🟢 April 27 - 'Show Yourself! Wooden creation'
Intarsia is a modern technique of decorating furniture, consisting of laying precise mosaics using wood. Artists who used it used different colors and types of this material to create magnificent still lifes or perspective views. During the third workshops in the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will take a closer look at various bathroom furniture made in this technique and make collages inspired by intarsia. To create them, we will use different types of recycled wood - sticks, toothpicks, and thin veneers.
🟢 May 25 - 'Show Yourself! Fabric creation'
A court lady in a rococo dress and a king in a coronation outfit. The collection of the Royal Baths consists of paintings depicting beautifully dressed ladies and elegant gentlemen. During the fourth meeting in the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will play court tailors and design outfits worthy of kings and queens. Our inspiration will be various portraits from the collection of the Royal Baths, depicting people from the Baroque and Enlightenment eras. Using recycled fabrics, we will consider whether fashion is ecological, and whether used or handmade clothes can be as good as store-bought ones?
🟢 June 29 - 'Show Yourself! Plastic creation'
The Palace on the Isle was built on an artificial island made of wood, placed in the central location of the largest canal flowing through the garden - this way the architects obtained the illusion of a palace floating on water. Inspired by the king's main residence, its photographs, and plans, we will together create a miniature Palace on the Isle. To create the model, we will use used bottles and other plastic waste. At the end of the classes, we will find out if - like the architects - we can make our object float on water.
🟢 July 14 - 'Show Yourself! Luminous creation'
Stanisław August, an 18th-century resident of the Royal Baths, was called by his contemporaries the philosopher king. While ruling, he tried to fulfill the ideals of an enlightened ruler; he was interested in art and various scientific novelties, including astronomy. So it's no wonder that when the Polish astronomer Marcin Poczobutt-Odlanicki discovered a new constellation in 1777, he named it after the ruler 'Poniatowski's Bucket.' During the sixth workshops in the 'Show Yourself!' series, our material will be light, and with its help, we will try to recreate the royal constellation. We will find out that even using such a commonly available material, we can create interesting works.
🟢 August 24 - 'Show Yourself! Clay creation'
Do you know what medals are? They are not only awards for athletes but also small reliefs used to commemorate an event or person. The first ones were made in ancient Rome, but they gained the greatest popularity in the Enlightenment era when they were made from various materials. During the seventh meeting in the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will make clay reliefs on which we will immortalize important people for us - parents, grandparents, friends, and maybe favorite footballers or characters from fairy tales. Our inspiration will be reliefs from the collection of the Royal Baths, showing various historical and mythological figures.
🟢 September 28 - 'Show Yourself! Natural creation'
The buildings of the Royal Baths are full of surprising details, such as doorknobs in the shape of chubby children or candlesticks with floral forms. During the last meeting in the 'Show Yourself!' series, we will create decorations inspired by the bathroom interiors, which will later adorn our rooms. The material we will use comes from nature. During the classes, we will learn how to dry flowers and other plants and use them to create beautiful decorations. We will find out that nature can be the best artist; sometimes all it takes is a little help to create a masterpiece.
