This autumn Garnizon Sztuki — a theatre of positive emotions in Warsaw — opens a new season with a strong premiere: the play “FRIENDS / Le Mensonge”, an intelligent and subversive comedy by one of the most talked-about contemporary French playwrights, Florian Zeller. This production is more than theatre. It’s a daring experiment, a game in which private emotions mix with fiction.
FRIENDS / Le Mensonge is a bravely written, suspenseful text in which anyone can see themselves reflected like in a mirror. It’s a special mirror because on stage we will see... real married couples. Agata Wątróbska and Janusz Chabior, Zuzanna Grabowska and Paweł Domagała / Agnieszka Głowacka and Piotr Głowacki. Three acting duos who share not only work but also private life. Their relationships and shared experiences blend with the characters’ emotions, giving the production an intensity that cannot be directed. Every look, touch, and understatement gains unique meaning.
The story is seemingly simple: two friendly married couples meet for dinner. A glass of wine, small jokes, a great atmosphere... Until the casual conversation drifts to infidelity and the question whether one must always tell the truth, or whether sometimes a lie is the better solution. Slowly everything begins to fall apart — trust, loyalty, the sense of security. A game begins; it’s no longer clear who is right and who is hiding something. Research shows that most of us lie once or twice a day, usually to protect ourselves or someone close.
Florian Zeller, a master of contemporary domestic comedy, in “FRIENDS / Le Mensonge” dissects these mechanisms, showing how thin the line is between a protective lie and a destructive half-truth. With surgical precision he balances humor and psychological depth, examining the fragile construction of trust in relationships. He amuses with sharp dialogue, surprises with twists, and provokes questions that have no easy answers.
The new production from Garnizon Sztuki Theatre provides the audience with a unique experience — the story of friendly married couples is performed by actors who are also couples offstage. It’s theatre where fiction and reality meet before the audience’s eyes, creating tension that cannot be reproduced in any other configuration.
Premiere: November 21, 2025, Garnizon Sztuki Theatre, Warsaw.
