If one were to choose a single word to try to describe the life of Jadwiga Stańczakowa, it would be: shadow.
Loss of sight, entering the shadow. The shadow of her father. The shadow of Jewish origin.
The shadow of the ghetto. The shadow of a lost brother and friends. The shadow of Miron Białoszewski. The shadow of depression.
However, a single word cannot describe an entire life. Because the path of the once-blinded Jadwiga Stańczakowa is also an unimaginable, arduous and often hopeless struggle to leave the shadow.
From every shadow. To brightness. To her own creativity, to her own self, to self-determination, self-acceptance and deciding her fate. The fate of a woman, mother, grandmother, journalist and poet.
She called herself: „I, the blind one.” And as one of the first she dared to write about loss of sight and depression in a way no one had written before.
The monodrama performed by Agnieszka Przepiórska will not be a story of a forgotten, sick poet pigeonholed by literary scholars as „the one of Miron.” It will be a poetic journey about a brave, courageous, tough and sensitive woman at once, with broad horizons and interests, who sees much more and farther than most people who thought their sight was fine. It’s a wild ride, on a flying carpet, to the stars, to colors, to green.
„This is not a role in the classical sense... I am looking for an experience — a genuine, tender encounter with what might have been in her. With that silence she carried within. With that courage to be herself. It’s a huge challenge, but an even greater honor that I can carry this story. The story of an extraordinary woman” – Agnieszka Przepiórska
The play „Jadwiga” was accepted to the 32nd Nationwide Competition for the Staging of Polish Contemporary Drama.
