It used to be a common skill – everyone in the countryside could weave a basket for potatoes or fruit harvesting. Today, this skill is disappearing along with the last masters of basketry. It is worth learning this art to save it from being forgotten. The value of Polish basketry as cultural heritage has been recognized by the inclusion of the skill of weaving a basket called 'szulim' (or wicker basket) on the UNESCO heritage list. Participants will learn: - Weaving a basket on a round plywood base - Weaving walls using the rib-cross technique with a single thread or layer - Finishing the basket with a simplified 2/1 rim or a full 3-pair rim - Attaching a natural decorative stick 👩🏫 Instructor: Gabriela Gąsowska – hailing from Urzecze, an ethnographic region along the Vistula River south of Warsaw, where wicker weaving was a common and integral part of daily life. She is a basket weaver both by passion and profession. She completed a vocational course in basket weaving and passed the professional qualification exam. She primarily weaves with wicker and string but also enjoys experimenting with other natural materials such as larch, pine root, rye straw, hops, iris, and cattail. 📩 Limited spots available.
